The Blue Hour

WOW to the ‘blue hour’! The blue hour is term used by videographers and photographers to describe the intense blue light that is displayed in the sky around 20-30 minutes before sunrise or after sunset or at the onset or climax or civil twilight. So it doesn’t actually last an hour but merely about 5 to 10 minutes of ‘perfect’ light to capture architectural elements in what I term is their best light. Below So I have put together a collection of my favourite and possibly best images from the capture of cityscapes, commercial buildings and residences within the ‘blue hour’ to aptly showcase the art of architectural capture at this time of the day – that time when buildings come alive in my eyes!

Allows the glazing in the glass-clad building to illuminate to its full extent – notice how the clouds glow with a reddish tint as they reflect the city lights in the distance

Views over a pool towards the ocean are always most effective as different blue hues are experienced in the shot.

Pool water and moody sky reflect each other perfectly at this time

I love how when shooting interiors within the this key lighting period the view outside the residence resonates a beautiful deep blue no matter what the weather conditions.

At this time you also catch the last colours of the sunset enhancing the gate house to at a major SA brand distribution centre
