Peter Ries Architects are a practise whose work I very much appreciate and enjoy to showcase. This home, designed by Peter Ries Architects, is situated in the Cotswold Downs Estate in Kwazulu Natal. Having previously photographed two other sites for magazine editorials by the same architect in the estate I was excited by the prospect that this home would offer and it certainly did not disappoint for the shoot – the weather was also quite surreal for this project.

This residence completely maximizes the golf course views over the dam in front of the deck adjoining the pool. The classical but natural flow through the home allows each aspect to take advantage of the sensational view. The added advantage of stackable glass sliding doors folding away to the walls bring a complete openness to the exterior.

Car Showrooms

One of the aspects of a building that I often feel really enhances the photograph is large expanses of glazing ie. big windows. The lighting from within the structure shows off the interior so well in the blue hour too. This is normally always the case when it comes to car showrooms and I absolutely love showcasing them – especially those of the luxury brands. Below are, in order of appearance, showcase shots from Lexus Umhlanga, MG Umhlanga, BMW Alberante (Alberton, Gauteng), Porsche Centre Umhlanga in Durban, Toyota Umhlanga, Toyota Empageni and Mercedes Benz NMI in Durban Central.

Urban Park Hotel and Spa

Urban Park Hotel & Spa is the new hot property in the Umhlanga new town centre and a great location for a good meal in the Cosmopolitan Restaurant, accommodation for a few nights, relaxation in the Aqua Spa or host your conference in a superb venue. The hotel, along with the adjacent residential block, was designed by PGA Architects and built by Construction ID. Then following on from their superb work at The Square Boutique Hotel, the dynamic design team from Union 3 undertook the interior design and space planning of the hotel interiors. Their great conceptual use of natural wood and earthy, textured fabrics combined with the dynamic Clint Friedman Collection of wall-art and cushion fabrics, has made for the extra wow-factor as you explore this magnificent hotel.

Durban really is a beautiful city. On this adventure my aim was to to capture area around Moses Mabhida Stadium from various different locations around Durban – from 2km out to sea at 2000ft above the to cruising 50ft over the breakwater towards the shoreline feeling like a scene from a Magnum P.I. episode. This was the first time I’d seen Durban from the southern side of the Bluff, as you would notice below. Not only was the weather great for this flight in a Robinson 22 helicopter but the sea below was so clean and crystal clear to compliment the blue, cloudless sky.

Canelands Beach Club revisited

Having showcased the Canelands Beach Club just over a year ago (the initial image selection also featured on this site), I was commissioned to return and take a greater range of comprehensive and updated imagery. This time the emphasis was to be on the luxury interiors, the restaurant, together with the fine dining you can expect at Canelands Beach Club and Spa as well as the resort location in its proximity to the beach. I also experienced the tranquility and beauty of the Spa that will help you relax while on holiday at this superb location.

Tiffanys Shopping Centre

This new 10 000m² centre in Salt Rock, a one-stop convenience shopping Centre on the Dolphin Coast, is the buzz place to be and with the Umhlali Spar having relocated to this location and being the anchor tenant, the spaces are filling up fast. The centre has been designed by the team at Ballito-based CA Architects.

“This type and size of convenience centre has become very successful throughout South Africa and compliments rather than competes against the much larger regional centres” says Hexagon Property Solutions director Kevin Dunkley. It has been a delight to showcase this centre as the architectural design allows for a modern twist in improving the Dolphin Coast.

One on Herwood is an upmarket residential development designed by PGA Architects, with panoramic sea views of the Umhlanga coastline through the bay of Durban. With interior spaces by Jossi Interior Design, the sassy and sophisticated reception area is most welcoming and exudes luxury from the moment you enter the complex. This development is sure to sell well in its first phase into the marketplace.

Scottsville Mall Pietermartizburg

I do enjoy showcasing shopping malls. With all the horizontal and vertical lines, long passageways buzzing with people and full colour from the various shopfronts. This showcase is of the newly renovated Scottsville Mall in Pietermartizburg designed by the Durban office of architects Boogertman and Partners.

Hayfields Mall Pietermaritzburg

Hayfields Mall in Pietermartizburg has recently undergone a revamp where the construction work was undertaken by Macwin Construction. The Mall is set in outlying suburbs of Pietermartizburg and thus the idea to keep with the farmhouse style of architecture to the entrances and high gabled roofs compliments the area well.

Cargo Hold Restaurant

The Cargo Hold Restaurant is a fine dining establishment serves up sensational meals inside the hull of a sunken ship at Ushaka Marine World in Durban. The venue is truly unique in that one of the aquarium’s shark tanks forms part of the restaurant environment.
