A Union of Retro and Industrial

It really is such a pleasure to capture imagery that shows the heart, passion and hard work of the home owner. This was definitely the case in this one bedroom apartment in Glenwood, Durban, where the owner, being in the building and construction business, took on the project of making this old run down apartment a face-lift second to none.

Things like taking out the wooden floor, laying a screeded concrete surface and then using the floor boards as window shutters were what makes this a unique interior with a very different outcome. The kitchen counter is a concrete slab to mirror the floors but then suspended as a floating shelf by thick steel cables. All the plaster on the walls were carefully chipped away to reveal the bare brickwork and then treated accordingly. Most of the appliances and furniture were custom built or modified and restored from scrap heaps and then placed on wheels so that cleaning the apartment is simple – for built in cupboards and storage the alternate was discarded changeroom lockers! With the owner being health conscious and into fitness, home gym apparatus has been incorporated within the bedroom area – all these were custom designed to fit the space. Personally, I loved the chalk boards, the magazine pin-up headboard and aspects of self-motivation scattered throughout the living space.

Thanks Dennis, yeah the lensbaby in a place like this was very useful. I was supposed to shoot this apartment over a month ago but told the client that I had a lens on the way which would be perfect for this place and it sure was.

Grant, as usual your photos are hot.

Jared, this has got to be one of the nicest places I’ve seen, I really dig it.

  9. Love what Jared did here! Especially the washed floor texture and the abundance of casters. A man-pad if ever there was one.

And I am also curious about this lensbaby – care to share you secret weapon Grant?
